Jesus is Love

A planned coup d'etat in China was uncovered when a plot to assassinate Chairman Mao Tse-Tung failed. A group of Soviet
diplomats were expelled from the UK for espionage. The Washington Senators baseball team finalized plans to move to
Arlington, Texas and become the Texas Rangers. A cyclone and tidal wave in India's Bay of Bengal killed an estimated
10,000 people. And in Orlando, Florida, the new Walt Disney World theme park opened for business.
Continuing with our series of "theme" issues, this edition was about love -- both romantic love and spiritual or agape
love. We decided that the "real hook in the whole system is that lousy feeling of oppression that creeps up inside us
and spoils the beautiful freedom we almost had," and that "our response to love is in direct proportion to the freeness
with which it comes to us." The solution? Through Jesus, we "tapped into an unlimited supply of supernatural love,"
and God forgave us for our ego trip, our disobedience, and our apathetic couldn't-care-less attitude toward Him.
The HFP went to the 1971 U.S. Surfboard Championships at the Huntington Beach pier, handing out several thousand copies
of our special August surfing edition of the HFP titled "Stoked on Jesus." The event drew more than 67,000 surfing
enthusiasts and was the #1 surfing contest in the U.S. Some of the heavier moments were to be found out of the water,
as surfers had "a face-to-face confrontation with the person of Jesus Christ" and had the opportunity to find about
about another kind of water -- living water. The HFP van got a $5.00 parking ticket from the Huntington Beach police
(we were in a no parking zone, it was all we could find), but it was well worth it for the opportunity to share Jesus
with thousands. We printed a full page of photos of the exciting day.
A new series of Jesus People Bible training seminars were coming up in Hollywood, and our directory of Jesus centers,
Bible studies, rap sessions and more continued to grow, listing literally hundreds of places and events across the U.S.
and Canada, Haiti, Guam, Germany... as the Jesus revolution rolled on around the world.
Our friend Robin Cumberland created the cartoon shown at right, of an antique phonograph complete with heart and mouth,
and the caption "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34). The photo shown at lower right is a
Calvary Chapel beach baptism at Corona Del Mar. The water, and the cliffs surrounding the beach, were filled with joyful
Jesus People celebrating.
