Jesus Loves You
July 20, 1971

Jazz trumpet legend Louis Armstrong died in New York City at the age of 70. President Nixon announced his
plans to visit the People's Republic of China. Juan Corona was indicted in California for the murder of 25
migrant farm workers. In Madrid, Spanish dictator Generalissimo Francisco Franco appointed prince Juan Carlos
as his deputy. And two weeks after the death of Jim Morrison of the Doors in Paris, we printed a lengthy
commentary on his life and death, centered around the lyrics of the Doors' powerful anthem, "The End".
News arriving from seven states confirmed that the Jesus Movement -- and God's Holy Spirit -- were on the move
as never before. There may not be a surfing beach in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but Jesus People there held an
unforgettable baptism in Lake Minnetonka. 500 Jesus freaks were packing a theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota
on Sunday mornings to hear "undiluted Bible teaching." Over 2,000 Jesus People attended an eight-day event in
North Carolina. News streamed in from Tucson AZ, Greensburg KY, Kent OH and more. Six brothers and sisters
wrote to the HFP pleading for help with drug addiction, two from their jail cells, and we wrote back with the
only solution we know -- Jesus.
Our Jesus People Training Centers had expanded from one to three with the addition of JPTCs in Santa Ana and
Highland Park in addition to Hollywood. Free Jesus People Festivals were scheduled for Van Nuys, Long Beach,
and Tucson. We gave one last "push" to the upcoming sunrise communion and baptism planned for July 25 at Will
Rogers State Beach north of Los Angeles. A new Jesus house, the Outreach, offered Bible raps and
"electric Jesus music" in El Monte. We also printed photos of a recent beach evangelism in Santa Barbara.
Tom Jackson's photo at right shows the Hollywood Palladium as crowds began to arrive for another Jesus
Festival of Music. What look like stacks of boxes on the sidewalk are pallets of Hollywood Free Papers fresh
from the printer, ready to be distributed at the Festival.
Our brother Kent Gillam designed the beautiful "Jesus Christ Loves You" graphics shown at lower right.
